April 2013 Meeting Minutes

MONDAY, April 8, 2013
1. Meeting called to order at 7 pm by Ellie Martindale.

2. Attendee Status:
Present:  Chuck Cenkner, Glen Dunbar, Kathy Marley-Dunbar, Ellie Martindale, Marie Iaria, Judy Polliard, Shirley Marks,  Mary Beth Follett,  Theresa Bell Mowery, Brian Moore. Kathryn Nonas-Hunter, Gene Gangwish, Joanne Kaldy,  Bill Renz.
Excused. Jill Lawley, Bob Hosteter.

3. Previous Meeting Minutes: Approved.

4. Treasury Activity Report:
BEGINNING BALANCE:       $6193.05
INCOME:                              0.00
ACTIVITY:                             62.71

5. Committee Reports:

  • Crime Watch:  There was a recent car break in.
  • Social Committee:
    May Social:  Kathryn contacted several local realtors.  Several will set up a table, and they may set up an open house.    Glen will do the grilling, and $50 was appropriated for the food.  Several grills will be needed.
  • Communications:
    Discussion: should we have a Facebook page?  It would be a way to get things to show up on a daily basis.  It was tabled for the time being as it would require continual monitoring.
  • Beautification:
    Spring Cleanup:  Anyone can clean up and prune on their own.  Date set for Saturday, May 4th with May 5th for rain date.Mulch Day:  Saturday, May 11th.   Hershey School may bring a group of students to help with the mulch work or clean up.Weed spray:  it was approved to spray our park areas with an appropriate weed and feed compound.  It will cost approximately $100.
    Fencing Issues:   It will be a spring project for PennDot.
  • Fundraising:
    A  flea market committee has been established.  April 29th is the first meeting at 6:30 pm.   Additional planning meetings will be at three week intervals.


6. Old Business:

  • Property Issues:
    329 S. Front St.  Previous owners have been contacted.  They have been asked to hire someone to clean up.  The adjacent lot will be reported for trash.  The garage has accumulated trash as well.  Ellie will speak to the garage owners to ask them to clean up.  This will be done prior to filing a complaint.
  • Street lights:
    Lighten UP Harrisburg: meeting was held again.  A manpower issue exists at the city.  Street lights are the last item of focus.  A traffic manager will be hired by the city, freeing  up city workers to tend to lights.
  • Trash cans are reappearing in the park.
  • City Beautiful 2.0: continue to meet, organizational at this point.
  • Egg Hunt:  20 kids had a great time, parents as well.
  • Contractor List:  Ellie will clean up Susan Fahey’s old list, and add new suggestions.  This will be added to the web site.
  • Playground Support Group:  Several individuals have expressed interest in participating in this.  Ellie will be contacting them.
  • March Social:  Thanks to the participants, the guest and Dr. Barton.  It was a successful event.  Dr. Barton’s paper will be placed on our web site under history at a later date.


7. New Business:

  • Sale of former Char’s building:  no bids were to be had.
  • Dog Park:  It was discussed, Ellie wrote a letter to respond to the request.  The city also vetoed the idea in the past.
  • Historical Society of Dauphin County:  The organization would like Shipoke residents to become more involved in the mansion and organization.
  • Newsletter content:  May Fest, Thank yous, clean up/mulch days, playground clean up committee.


Next Meeting:  At the home of Ellie Martindale, May 13th.  722 Showers Street.
