Committee Reports

Crime Watch:

  • Packages continue to be taken from front steps of a home on Front Street
  • An envelope containing a credit card was taken from another home on Front Street (the card had not been activated).

It was again noted that residents should continue to be alert and keep areas around their homes lighted as a deterrent to crime and when an incident occurs, they should contact Glen Dunbar. If they see someone who is questionable, they should contact the police.

Social:

  • National Night Out is scheduled for August 8. It was suggested, as in past years, we arrange for a band to perform in Race Street Park. Because this event is before our next board meeting, planning for the event will be handled through email. It was felt this is a way to showcase Shipoke as a friendly and fun place to live.

Beautification:

  • Kathy volunteered to talk to Dr. Barton at Premier Eye about low hanging branches near her Tuscarora Street parking lot. Concern was expressed about the appearance of Dr. Barton’s other properties in the neighborhood.
  • Betty reported the skunks are back in Race Street Park. Residents will be reminded to place their trash bags in containers.
  • Concern was expressed about the condition of the park across from the hotel during the recent July 4th holiday. It was suggested that we contact the hotel manager and ask that they put a sign at their check-in area reminding their patrons and employees to respect the neighborhood and put their trash in provided containers.

Communication:

  • Betty Wolfe reported she has been posting comments about the neighborhood on Facebook. It was suggested she include pictures of the flea market, the Art Association Soiree that was held at the Snyder home in June, pictures of dogs in Shipoke and also stories that readers would find interesting.
  • It was noted that everything put on Facebook, Twitter, and other media should be positive and promote the neighborhood.
  • A suggestion was made that when Ellie does her email news that she put “meet us on Facebook” at the bottom of the email.
  • All photos taken at Shipoke events should be forwarded to Betty and Brian.
  • Kathy reported that PayPal is successful and working well.

Fundraising:

  • The Flea Market is Saturday, July 12 from 7:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., with the picnic starting at 5:00 at the Conoy Street Playground and Ellie has been busy organizing the event.
  • Glen will contact the city for additional trash cans in Riverfront Park.
  • Dave Witwer and Betty Wolf will chair the picnic.
  • Brian will be painting lines for vendor spots this week.

 Old Business

  • After a discussion about the banners in the neighborhood that need to be repaired, it was decided to deal with this issue at the next meeting

New Business

  • It was reported that several people have received their flood insurance bills and the cost has not gone up and that the Biggert-Waters issue is ended.
  • In order to increase interest in living in the City and specifically our neighborhood, JoAnne suggested we start an initiative to spread the word that Shipoke is a great place to live.
  • She recommended making connections with local reporters and inviting them to a board meeting or several of us meeting them for lunch to discuss resources we have, who we are, and include our issues and concerns.
  • Writing letters to the editor to promote what Shipoke offers to residents.
  • Bob suggested we contact The Burg for an article.
  • Promote the new high-end Cuban Restaurant that will be at the corner of Race & Conoy Streets in the former Char’s Bella Mundo location
  • Plan more special events to bring people to the neighborhood, such as National Night Out on August 8.

Next Meeting: Tuesday, August 12, 2014 at 7:00 P.M. at the home of Susan Fahey.

Adjournment: The meeting adjourned at 7:40 pm.
